How to size an off-grid solar system in Canada

Add up daily energy use (kWh). Your electricity bill or a load list gives the number. A cottage might use 3–8 kWh a day; a full-time home often uses 15–30 kWh.

Size the inverter for peak load. Add the largest loads that run together, including motor start-up for well pumps, fridges and power tools. Homes with 240 V appliances need a split-phase inverter such as the Growatt SPE 12000US.

Plan the array for winter, not summer. Much of Canada gets only a few peak sun hours in December and January, so a year-round home needs a larger array than the same home used only in summer. Steeper panel tilt helps shed snow and catch low winter sun.

Size the battery for cloudy days. Plan at least one to two days of storage, and a generator input for long stretches of poor weather.

Keep lithium batteries warm. LiFePO4 batteries should not be charged below 0 °C. Install them indoors, in a heated space or an insulated enclosure.

Off-grid solar FAQs
What size off-grid solar system do I need for a cottage?
A seasonal cottage with lights, a fridge, a water pump and small appliances is usually well served by the 3.5 kW or 6 kW kit. Year-round use, electric heat or a deep well pump usually needs the 12 kW kit.
Can I run a whole house off-grid in Canada?
Yes. The 12 kW, 24 kW and 36 kW kits supply 120/240 V split-phase power like a utility service. In winter, most full-time homes also keep a backup generator for long cloudy periods.
Do off-grid solar systems work in snow and cold?
Panels work well in the cold and often produce more per sun hour in cold weather. Snow must slide off or be cleared, and batteries must be kept above freezing while charging.
Can I add a generator?
Yes. The Growatt off-grid inverters in our home kits accept a generator or grid input to charge the batteries when solar is low.
Are there rebates for off-grid solar in Canada?
Programs vary by province and change often. Use our rebate finder to check what applies to you.
Can I install the system myself?
Many customers install the panels and racking themselves. Electrical connections and permits must follow your provincial code, and we recommend a licensed electrician for the final hookup.
