Choose a solar mounting location by checking sunlight, usable space, structural suitability and the complete installation scope. A ground mount can offer flexibility and easier access. A suitable roof can use existing space without occupying your yard. Neither choice is automatically better for every Canadian property.
Before ordering, compare a roof layout and a ground layout using the same panels and the same site information. This keeps the decision about your property rather than the rack’s advertised panel count.
Start with the location, then choose the hardware
| Decision | Roof mount | Ground mount |
|---|---|---|
| Available space | Depends on usable roof area and required clearances | Needs suitable land and space around and between rows |
| Shade and orientation | Constrained by roof surfaces and nearby obstructions | May allow a different location or orientation |
| Structure | Roof condition, attachment method and capacity matter | Foundation, soil and rack configuration matter |
| Access | Access may require working at height | Ground-level access may simplify inspection |
| Project scope | Roof-specific mounting and weatherproofing details | Foundations, trenching and site preparation may be needed |
Use these as questions to investigate, not fixed cost rankings. A difficult ground site can cost more than a straightforward roof installation, while a roof needing replacement can change the comparison.
Why a six-panel rack may not fit your six panels
Panel count does not establish compatibility. A quote needs the exact module model, outside dimensions, frame thickness, approved clamp zones and intended orientation. Two 500W panels can have different dimensions. A newer, wider module may require a different rack configuration from an older module with the same cell-count description.
For example, a six-module layout using panels 1.134m wide has 6.804m of combined module width if all six are arranged side by side. That figure excludes gaps, rails and end clearances. It is an arithmetic illustration, not a mounting layout or a rack-compatibility approval.
Check foundations and row spacing before buying
A ground-mount hardware package does not establish that its foundations are suitable for your soil or local conditions. Ask which foundation options apply, what engineering documentation accompanies the exact configuration, and which materials and services are included in the quote.
Where more than one row is proposed, tilt and spacing affect inter-row shade. Preserve room for access and any site-specific requirements. Avoid committing to the largest panel count until the actual layout and structural scope are confirmed.
What seasonal adjustment changes
ROCKSOLAR lists a Kinetic adjustable ground mount with 20°, 45° and 60° positions. Adjustment offers a choice of seasonal tilt. The benefit depends on location, shading and whether someone will safely make those adjustments.
Do not treat an adjustable angle as proof that the rack suits every wind or snow condition. Use Kinetic’s documentation for the exact mounting generation, module arrangement and foundation. The manufacturer publishes separate spacing guides and foundation information; those details belong in the design review.
Compare complete quotes
- Identify the panel model and approved module layout.
- Separate rack hardware from foundations and site work.
- Confirm roof attachments or ground-foundation scope.
- Identify electrical routing, cable distance and trenching where applicable.
- Check delivery, unloading, installation and documentation responsibilities.
- Allow access for inspection and maintenance.
A lower rack price can be outweighed by missing site work. Ask for an itemized scope so both quotes solve the same project.

Common questions
Will any rack work with modern high-wattage panels?
No. Confirm physical dimensions, approved clamping and the manufacturer’s configuration limits.
Does buying a rack include foundation engineering?
Check the quoted scope. Hardware, engineering, foundations and installation are separate items unless the supplier explicitly includes them.
