A Growatt hybrid system runs your home on solar power during the day, stores the extra in a battery for the evening or a power outage, and draws on the grid only when it needs to. At its centre is the Growatt SPH 10000TL-HU-US, a 10kW hybrid inverter built for North American 120/240V split-phase homes. This guide explains what it does, what it can and can't back up, how to size panels and batteries around it, and what Growatt hybrid kits cost in Canada.
What a hybrid solar system is
A grid-tie system sends solar power to your home and the grid but shuts off in a blackout. An off-grid system has no grid connection at all. A hybrid system does both jobs: it uses the grid normally, stores energy in a battery, and keeps your chosen circuits running when the grid goes down. One hybrid inverter replaces a separate solar inverter, battery inverter and charge controller.

What it can back up
The 62.5A pass-through means the Growatt usually powers a backup sub-panel with the circuits that matter most, rather than the whole house: fridge and freezer, furnace fan, lights, internet, well or sump pump, and some outlets. Large electric loads such as baseboard heaters, an electric furnace or an EV charger normally stay on the main panel.
Battery size sets how long those circuits run. These planning estimates assume no solar and a steady average load:
| Average load | 1 GSL battery (14.34 kWh) | 2 GSL batteries (28.68 kWh) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 kW (essentials) | About 11 hours | About 22 hours |
| 2 kW | About 5.7 hours | About 11 hours |
| 3 kW | About 3.8 hours | About 7.6 hours |
With solar panels recharging the batteries each day, a two-battery system can carry essential loads through multi-day outages in spring, summer and fall. In December and January, plan on less solar and keep a generator as backup for long outages.
Power matters as well as storage: one 14.34 kWh battery supplies about 5 kW continuously (100A recommended at 51.2V), so it won't run the full 10kW. Two batteries share the load and are the better starting point for heavier backup.
Sizing solar panels
Growatt recommends up to 15kW of panels on the SPH 10000. Our kits use 12.15 kW to 12.6 kW, slightly more than the inverter's 10kW output, so the inverter reaches full output more often on cloudy days and in winter. Panel voltage rises in the cold, so string design must be checked against the lowest temperature where you live; we check this for every kit.

Installing a Growatt hybrid system in Canada
- Licensed electrician: the inverter connects to your electrical panel, so a licensed electrician must install it, with a permit and inspection (in Ontario, by the Electrical Safety Authority).
- Utility approval: if the system will send power to the grid or use net metering, apply to your local utility first.
- Battery location: the inverter is rated IP65 for outdoor mounting, but the GSL wall batteries are indoor (IP20) units and must not be charged below 0°C. Install them in a basement, utility room or heated garage, or choose the self-heating GSL battery for unheated spaces.
- Weight: each 14.34 kWh battery weighs about 132 kg and ships on a pallet; plan for two people or a lift.
Frequently asked questions
Can I start with solar only and add batteries later?
Yes. The 10kW Growatt hybrid solar kit ships without batteries, and GSL batteries can be added later.
Can I expand beyond 10kW?
Yes. Two SPH 10000 inverters can run together for 20kW, as in our 20kW hybrid system, and GSL batteries can be connected in parallel for more storage.
Does it work with a generator?
The inverter has provision for a compatible generator to charge the batteries during long outages; generator sizing and wiring are confirmed during system design.
Will it lower my power bill?
Yes, by using your own solar power first and, where your utility has time-of-use rates, by running the home from the battery during peak hours.
